| Australian technology company NetStar has been awarded a contract to supply and manage a converged IP network across five City of Melbourne council sites, including Council House 2 (CH2), Australia's first 6 green star rated building.
Under the terms of the contract NetStar will be responsible for the design and integration of the converged network and will provide ongoing management and support at the five buildings for a three year period.
NetStar will supply a single network cable to each user in the new CH2 building to meet its 6 star rating requirements, delivering cost savings in wiring and network management. Approximately 550 staff at CH2 will have access to the network.
At the four CBD council sites, more than 2000 converged network ports and over 1000 large screen IP handsets will be installed, with three IPFX integrated call centres to be implemented as part of the total solution.
The network will be based on Cisco hardware to provide Quality of Service and Power over Ethernet to every desktop and will be managed by NetStar's 24/7 Global Network Centre.
NetStar Australia's New Business Manager, Alex Hill, said “the network design delivers availability and resilience, minimising the possibility that a single failure in equipment, power, fibre or cable would cause disruption to a data or voice service for any user.”
System security will be maintained by the common security features that exist in the operating software and tight communication between individual devices will ensure that security profiles are carried from switch ports even when users move devices around the network.
The use of a converged voice and data network will allow the system to be upgraded with new technologies as required by the council at minimal cost.
NetStar intends to have the five sites fully deployed with the new IP network by June 2006.
